Rhetorical Analysis the Crisis, No. 1 by Thomas Paine Essay
Rhetorical Analysis: The Crisis, No. 1 by Thomas Paine Political writer, Thomas Paine, in his persuasive writing, The Crisis No. 1, expresses feelings towards Britains control over the colonies. Paines purpose is to unite the colonists in an effort to retaliate against Great Britain. He uses an objective tone in order to unite and rally the common person in his nation. Paine opens his persuasion to the nation by warning that getting their freedom from Britain will not be easy. By using the simile, Tyranny, like hell..., he implies that Britains control over them will not be easy to overcome. As he says in the beginning of the paragraph, The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will...shrink from the service...but heâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Paine opens the closing paragraph by uniting the people with ethos, The far and near, the home counties and the back, the rich and the poor will suffer or rejoice alike. In saying that Paine implies, no matter what happens they all will st ay together, whether it be death or freedom. He also uses ethos by stating Not all the treasures in the world...could have induced me to support and offensive war, I think it murder., by saying this Paine shows that war was the last option he would have much rather came to a peaceful solution, but given the circumstances, there was no choice. Paine closes up the paragraph by using an asyndeton, Let them call me a rebel and welcome...but I should suffer the misery of devils were I to make a whore of my soul by swearing allegiance to one whose character is that of a sottish, stupid, stubborn, worthless, brutish man. His use of the asyndeton to show that the King is much more than that he listed. In The Crisis No. 1, Thomas Paine creates an objective tone to unite and rally the nation by showing what kind of man the King of Britain is. Perlman; 139w Paper Assignment #3 Media texts are created from past events that have occurred and often times Hollywood would try and manipulate the event so it represents the past and the reception it gets through different communities. The film Argo (2012) is no exception trying to show a ââ¬Å"Hollywoodizeâ⬠event of the Iranian Hostage Crisis which received mixed receptions and is controversial on how the event is portrayed. The film is often criticized for the authenticity and accuracy of how the event is portrayed; the film directed by Ben Affleck chose to add ââ¬Å"dramaâ⬠and manipulate the actual event in order to obtain a wider audience. Within the film sequence the film viewer can see how Affleck approach the topic with intercuts as the tension builds in Tehran and back in the U.S. trying to successful pull off an operation in the government. The film received great reception as a good film getting good reviews, but to some critics it becomes a question why did the film perform so well in the U.S.? The journey of Sunliner: The Sunliner is a renowned Compoany of the Australia and with its ever-expanding reputation as one of the most innovative Companies in the RV industry. Ever since the inception in the year 1974, the Sunliner has never thought of staying back and become stagnant, rather it continually focussed on the innovation to sustain the achieved reputation. The Company first started their journey with the low cost campervans to serve the basic purpose and to bring the recognition to the concept. Back in the year 1974, the Company had never thought of the position, what it has now. According to Bartolacci, Castellano and Cerqueti (2015), their continuous striving to the innovation brought different designs and concepts every time targeting its own customers. The success then fetched helped the Company in growing its reputation as one of the most trusted brands in Australia to serve the requirements of the adventurous people. Moreover, the geographical effect and the cultural lifestyle of the Aust ralian people have welcomed the concept of the Sunliner Company in an unlike fashion. The Sunliner Company started its journey first with the low cost campervans. Later on, it moved on to the concept of motorhomes and fifth wheelers. Bettencourt, Brown and Sirianni (2013) argue that of all the offerings that the Sunliner has for its customers, the Sunliner Monte Carlo Motorhome is the flagship series of the Company. Nonetheless, it has won several accolades to the company. The luxurious experience in the Monte Carlo Motorhome takes one to a different stage altogether. Camisn and Villar-Lpez (2014) argue that luxurious experiences combining with the capacity to accommodate luggages and the people inside have collectively narrowed the competition for the Sunliner. Thus, it has helped the Company in evolving as a winner and be at the forefront in the competition. The temptation for a luxury life while being on the road itself has opened up spaces to the RV industry to acquire its significant existence in Australia (Australian Motor Homes, 2016). The Sunliner Monte Carlo Motorhome is the flagship offering of the Company that offers luxury to the fullest with sufficient spacing inside to accommodate people and luggages. There are numerous of series representing all such as the Campervans, the Fifth Wheelers and the Monte Carlo Motorhomes. The campervans are less luxurious but more capacitive with good mobility features than the Motorhomes. On the other hand, the fifth wheelers works on the concept of providing the luxury life with good capacity combining with the mobility features also. Cassiman and Valentini (2015) argue that it does that by giving the vehicle an extra wheel to help in expanding the size of the vehicle to accommodate more. Chesbrough (2012) argue that the flagship Sunliner Motorhome, on the other hand, focuses more on the luxury part with good capacity but less mobility than the others two do. It is a flagship offering of the Sunliner Company for the most discerning travellers. According to Davila, Epstein an d Shelton (2012), the classic and the contemporary designs with the interior engineering has together brought smile on the faces of the discerning travellers. According to Jaruzelski, Loehr and Holman (2013), Technology has been used to the fullest of its exposure in the Monte Carlo series for the Sunliner Motorhomes. Characteristics of successful entrepreneurs with reference to the Sunliner: Jimenz-Jimenz, Martnez-Costa and Sanz-Valle (2014) argue that Successful entrepreneurs have several characteristics into them that help them stand in the competition at the forefront. Johnston and Bate (2013) argue that these features comprises of passion and motivation, risk taking, self-belief, adaptability flexibility, understanding market etc. These basic features separate out the winner from the competition. According to Kafetzopoulos and Psomas (2015), Passion and motivation comes in the picture for its utmost importance to any entrepreneurs. Passion is something that brings passion for anything. King and Lakhani (2013) argue that nonetheless, motivation is required for any success to achieve and it just gets bigger with when it comes to an organization. Kumar et al. (2012) argues that those who are contributing to the organization with their different assigned role, they all are required to give their best to the chances provided. Laforet (2013) argues that working collectively on the fullest of the potential makes things easier comparatively and this is something, which script the story of a successful organization. Lopez-Valeiras, Gomez-Conde and Naranjo-Gil (2015) argue that the Sunliner Company is the leader in the RV industry and its ever-ending motivation has catapulted this on the top position. Risk taking is another important aspect in the feather of successful entrepreneurs. This is something, which encourages for the innovation. Innovation is not just a term rather it evolves through a continuous long process. Nonetheless, the courage to go for a change and thereby inviting the risk factors involved in bringing the change gives birth to the innovation. Ye?il, Bykbe?e and Koska (2013) argue that the Sunliner Company are a good reader of the market competition and that understanding of the competition and their capability has collectively encouraged them for risk taking. Nonetheless, the one who fears to take risk do always fall short when it comes to survive in the competition. Self-belief is another very important characteristic of an entrepreneur. It helps in believing into the capability of entrepreneurs to give them chances to new ideas and thoughts. This again relates to innovation as it involves acknowledging the capability and then moves accordingly to achieve the success. Employees in the Company have strong self-belief in themselves ad that has reflected on their innovation part. Moreover, Wachsen and Blind (2016) argues that the innovation is separating the Company from others in the competition by allowing them to go for a change every time with the analysed customers requirement. Teece, Peteraf and Leih (2016) argue that the adaptability flexibility is the one nature, which strengthens the root of a Company firmly in the market. Adaptability with any circumstances and being flexible with the ever-changing customers requirement is something that narrows the line of competition in between the competitors. The Sunliner holds the status of one of the leading companies in the RV industry and this is to some extent because of their flexible nature with the ever-changing customers demand. They started their journey with the low cost campervans but gradually kept on experimenting with new ideas and thoughts to sustain the ever-losing reputation. The production of motorhomes and fifth wheelers are the consequence of their flexibility nature only. All the offerings ranging from the Campervans, motorhomes to the fifth wheelers are just the examples of being flexile with the customers demand. They understand their segment of market and that speak about their adaptabilit y with the market demands. Teece, Peteraf and Leih (2016) argue that the understanding the market and the targeted customers are the two most difficult aspects in the feathers of market competition. According to Pisano (2015), to penetrate better into the market segment, the proper understanding of the market and the targeted customers are immensely required. The Sunliners ruling in the market clearly reveals that the Company has a comparatively better understanding of the market and the demands of customers. According to Pisano (2015), ever since its inception, the Company has never looked back rather it has continually evolved as the quick learner of the mistakes. Identifying and Explaining entrepreneurial spirit and leadership of the Sunliner: The Sunliner is possessed with numerous features that enhance the entrepreneurship skills into the organization. Ever since its evaluation in the year 1974, the Company has never looked back, rather it went on progressing with every bit of its innovation. The most dominating feature of the Sunliner Company is its flexibility with the changed behaviour of the customers and the desire to use innovation. Moreover, Raasch and Von Hippel (2013) argue that the flexibility of the Company with the ever-changing customers demand can very well observed in the scuffling of the Company with the various range of vehicles. They started their journey with a low cost campervan back in the year 1974 when Tony Hunter with his wife Sue decided to convert a purchased van into a camper. Ever since then, they continually strived with their ever-changing innovation and brought new concepts of RV every time when it was required the most (Raasch and Von Hippel 2013). Their scuffling from campervan to motorho me and to the fifth wheelers strongly gives a support to the fact. Raasch and Von Hippel (2013) argue that they are one of the most innovative Company of Australia and are continually involved in bringing new ranges of luxurious RV. Raasch and Von Hippel (2013) argue that, innovation has taken the Company to a next level and that is observable in their ranges of offerings. Acquiring strategic advantage with the help of innovation in the Sunliner: According to Raasch and Von Hippel (2013), Strategic advantage is a characteristic of a company that possess the capability of providing an adventurous edge over the competitors. Strategic advantage is not always the same and keeps on changing with the changed behaviours of customers. Raasch and Von Hippel (2013) argue that a company deploys its existence in the targeted market segment with the pre-prepared strategic advantage targeting its penetration in the market. Raasch and Von Hippel (2013) argues that it takes a while to acquire a significant place in the market but a strategic advantage eases the competition out and drags the market in favour of the Company. According to Pisano (2015), Strategic advantage is the production of a continuous evolution in the field of innovation and that is something, which has helped the Sunliner Company to evolve as a winner in their segment of market. According to Pisano (2015), Innovation has evolved in the Sunliner Company through a continuou s process of its flexibility with the ever-changing customer behaviours. Innovative ideas and thoughts have all contributed the Sunliner in acquiring the dimensions in their manufacturing. Moreover, According to Raasch and Von Hippel (2013), a continuous striving of the Company in its innovation part has helped them in building up their own strategic advantage that has helped the Company in gaining the reputation. According to Raasch and Von Hippel (2013), there are some company, which has its strategic advantage in their low prices such as the Wal-Mart. On a contrary to this, Pisano (2015) argues that the Sunliner Company is more class oriented. They are relying on their sheer class offering in terms of facilities to enhance the life experience even further inside the RV. Teece, Peteraf and Leih (2016) argue that this kind of strategic advantage has helped the Sunliner Company in catapulting an enormous success to the Company. It is a worth watch that the Company still has its customers and has emerged as the leading RV Company in Australia. The reason behind this is the sheer understanding of the market. The Sunliner Company has targeted a particular segment of customers with their offerings and with Monte Carlo Motorhomes, they targeted those people who are adventurous and enjoy making fun on a road itself. The high-class standard peoples living in Australia are socially very inclined towar ds trips and holidays. Their instincts have attracted the Sunliner Company to get a hold on their targeted customers by providing them some flagship Monte Carlo Motorhomes. Moreover, according to Teece, Peteraf and Leih (2016), the Monte Carlo Motorhomes are classy and contemporary in look and are of top notch in facilities standards Research on the strategies of companies of the RV industry with the help of a figure denoting the competition in between: Competition is enormous there in between the top caravans manufacturing companies in Australia. Avida, Sunliner, Colorado and Royal Flair are notably the few manufacturers, which have established them as the top manufacturers of RV in Australia. The ever-expanding RV industry in Australia is the collective efforts of these notable companies. Moreover, competing with each other to prove the dominance in the market with the help of innovation has brought smiles on the faces of the RV industry in Australia. Australia has now emerged as one of the largest RV industries in the world. Nonetheless, Teece, Peteraf and Leih (2016) argue that the geographical and the social culture of Australia have helped the RV industry to groom to the fullest. Avida is the largest motorhome manufacturer in Australia, offering variety of ranges from motorhomes to caravans while focussing mainly on the designing part to give this the most robust structure. Moreover, it suits the Australian geographical condition. The Company is striving in their continuous innovation to enhance the productivity with respective quality parameters to have a competitive edge on its companies. Consequently, the Company is helping the Australian RV industry with its robust design vehicles opening up ample of opportunities to the Australian customers (Australian Motor Homes, 2016). Sunliner is one of the largest manufacturers of motorhomes in Australia. Their continuous striving to the innovation has brought in beautifully designed classical luxurious motorhomes to the Australian people. The luxurious offering by the Company to have a competitive edge on its competitors adds another feature in the feathers of variety of classes offering to the Australian people. Nonetheless, it has evolved Australia as one of the most versatile country in RV industries (Australian Motor Homes, 2016). Colorado caravans are the manufacturer of a wide range of standard layouts caravans in Australia. They have been serving the purpose for the last fifteen years with their continuous evolution as a sustained innovative company. The innovation has helped in going through the entire fifteen years with utmost success. It now caters a wide range of caravans to have a competitive edge and to sustain the competition. The Company has added another feature in the success story of Australia in the RV industry globally by adding variety of options to the customers (Australian Motor Homes, 2016). Royal Flair Company, ever since its inception in the year 1975 continually focussed on offering wide range of new caravans to suit the needs of people. A continuous striving to the innovation has compelled them every time to be flexible with the ever-changing travellers behaviours. Moreover, the Company tried every bit to produce the same quality in their production. It brought the recognition to the Company as the manufacturer of a wide range of new caravans in accommodating a full family inside a single caravan. To give it the competitive edge over its competitors has helped Australia by providing wide range of high capacity caravans (Australian Motor Homes, 2016). Identified issues: The first identified issue in the RV offering of the Sunliner Company is the driver seat, which is less effective as it does not have sufficient spacing inside the motorhome for this to swivel around. The swivelling of the seat enables the drivers to revolve around. Nonetheless, the driver does not require standing up and then turn around every time. The second issue, which the learner has noticed is a comparatively smaller slide out that results in a comparatively reduced facilities inside the motorhome. The longer slide out enables accommodating larger space that allows more facilities and amenities within the caravans. This is something, which is missing in the caravans offerings from the Sunliner. The third issue, which the learner has traced out is the low capacity payload that is only limited to 500 kg. A caravan journey becomes joyful once it meets with the basic requirements of the travellers. Moreover, any glitch in the offerings may lead to customer dissatisfaction. Recommendation: The first point of recommendation is for a driver seat that does not swivel around. The Sunliner should give an extra spacing to the driver seat to enable the seat to swivel as this makes a comfortable sitting experience to the driver. The second recommendation is for a longer slide out and there is a requirement of increasing the slide out a bit by making this in right proportion with others. The Sunliner should take a significant step in bringing out the change to inbuilt a comparatively longer slide out, which helps in providing extra space inside the motorhome to accommodate a spacious experience to the travellers. The third recommendation is there for the payload part, which is limited only to 500 kg. The payload inside the Sunliner Monte Carlo Motorhome needs to be comparatively larger in space to allow more luggages. Moreover, in the researcher point of view, increasing the slide out size will be helpful in bringing out both the changes related to the driver seat and the payload as it gives ample of capacity options. Conclusion: Innovation is an important and integral part of any enterprises irrespective of their business limit. Innovation provides a competitive edge to a company over its competitors. This report clearly reveals that the Sunliner is an innovative company that continually works on their innovation parts. Innovation that has always remained their integral part has brought flexibility with the ever-changed travellers behaviours. The Sunliner never looked back ever since its inception in the year 1974. Moreover, their continuous striving to the innovation to get the competitive edge has resurrected them as one of the biggest manufacturers of caravans in Australia. Their innovation has helped the Company in bringing out wide range of motorhomes, campervans and fifth wheelers. The Sunliner Monte Carlo Motorhome is the flagship model of the Company that is loaded with full of facilities and luxuries. The competition of the caravans manufacturing companies to acquire the competitive edge is helping Australia in achieving a high slot in the RV industry. At present, Australia is one of the biggest manufacturers of caravans. The competition in between the Australian caravans manufacturing companies is prospering the RV industry in Australia. The suitable geographical condition and the socio-cultural life of the Australian people are helping the RV industry in expanding to its fullest. It is by the virtue of the geographical effect added with the social lifestyle of the Australian peoples having inherited the adventurous instinct into the peoples. The socio-cultural lifestyle have compelled the Australian people go crazy for a luxury ride while being on the road itself and that is something, which has provided an space for the RV industry to get hold of the Australian market. Harrison Bergeron Theme Analysis Essay Example
Harrison Bergeron Theme Analysis Paper Harrison Bergeron Analysis This clear inequality teen them is unfair and creates competition, so the government decides to place a noise machine in Georges ear which will go off every so often to keep him from thinking too hard. Hazel, on the other hand, doesnt have to wear any such devise. As it turns out, this couple has a son named Harrison, however when he was younger he was so overly talented that they couldnt restrain him with normal ways, so the Handicapper General (the organization in charge of making all equal) decided to imprison him, as they believed he was planning a government overthrow at the age f 14. At the present day George and Hazel are relaxing watching some restrained ballerinas perform poorly when a government announcement interrupts the show. Harrison has escaped prison, and surprise surprise, hes at the ballerina show. He rips of the hundreds of pounds of restraints, his mask, and all of the other restraints, and he declares himself emperor. He then claims one of the ballerinas as him empress and they dance together in an unbelievably beautiful fashion, culminating with an extended kiss in which they ignore gravity. Finally theyre shot with a shotgun by the Handicapper General and they die. George and Hazel shortly afterwards forget what was sad on the television. There are many themes which this short story brings up in order to make the reader question how far he or she wishes government control to go. These themes include equality, competition, and censorship. However they can all be summed up into one theme statement. As demonstrated by George Burgeon perfectly, all those with an unfair talent are handicapped and prevented from showcasing their talent properly. While this does end up keeping the smart from beating out the dumb, it also prevents society from improving. When George has a thought about maybe not handicapping ballerinas so the show improves, it is immediately pushed way by his ear handicap. Hence, a potentially beneficial idea is shut down before it can even be discuss. In addition to harming society by not allowing potentially beneficial ideas to be discussed, these handicaps Just make the dumb dumber. Although many people arent mentally talented, they can improve their capabilities through hard work and education from people such as teachers and parents. Despite never being able to match those naturally more gifted then them, people would be able to become educated and capable of critical thinking. As is evidenced by Hazel, none of this improvement happens in 2081. She in no way would be considered average today, as she constantly forgets things and never thinks for herself, resulting in a below average thinker never improving, and therefore being less capable of deep thoughts then todays below average IQ person, who can improve his or her abilities. By creating equality many believe this would be the ultimate fulfillment of natural rights, not say in this scenario. Rights which are treasured in modern day society are rumpled upon, most notably free speech. The way in which people are made average in this world requires those who think not to do so, and when something happens to initiate a thought, a television station is temporarily shut down or a noise is sent through the brain. Freedom of expression is not allowed, as anyone who questions the system is thrown in Jail, such as Harrison. This story is all about how far one is willing to go to achieve equality, and the slippery slope scenario which it poses it quite frightening.

Strategic program managment paper
Strategic program managment paper Free Online Research Papers To remain competitive, companies today face many differing priorities. Challenges such asâ⬠leading company staff in thinking bigger, operating in direct relationship to customers and stockholdersââ¬â¢ needs, while staying flexible and adaptable to economic and market shifts ( Gaddy, p.171)â⬠are all examples of priorities faced by companies that want to be competitive . Friar Tucker International (FTI) is a hospitality service chain that has annual revenues in excess of $300 million and employs 1,200 people. The company currently manages 35 entertainment and cuisine establishments .FTI is seeking to expand operations through diversifying its portfolio, while maintaining the companyââ¬â¢s strategic objectives (Apollo, 2008). This paper will discuss the issues and opportunities in relationship to the existing projects. Situation Analysis Project selection, funding, resource allocation and prioritization are important issues which must be addressed, while maintaining focus on the companyââ¬â¢s strategic objectives. FTI has been accepting investment projects on a seemingly random nature (Apollo, 2008). CEO, Ricardo Bellini has established a Project Selection Committee (PSC) to identify the types of projects for consideration. However, the PSC has not demonstrated the necessary skills in development and implementation of program management. Each of the PSCââ¬â¢s have his or her pet projects that they support, yet they all want to please the CEO and have chosen to follow his lead on the latest project, the Galleria. The PSC does not have metrics in place to weigh all factors against strategic goals. The committee also lacks the effective use of data in to achieve optimal performance. Furthermore, no performance management metrics are in place to monitor the project, once chosen (Apollo, 2008). The stakeholders of FTI include the CEO, the hired consultant and various senior managers who make up the PSC. The Project Selection Committee members have not had any leadership training and are incapable of making decisions based on clear facts. Most of the decisions made are based on political alignment or personal gain. Program Management Plan (Process)Purdue states that , ââ¬Å"Successful project management requires that all knowledge areas (scope, time, cost, quality, human resource, communications, risk, procurement, project integration) be managed effectively. (Purdue, 2008, pg 90).â⬠Planning the scope will be necessary before the project can proceed. This requires identifying success factors, timelines, and preparing a scope matrix. Once the scope is completed and agreed upon by all, the next step is to obtain approval. The CEO, Ricardo Bellini will need to approve the project to move forward. Part of this approval process will be budget approval, identifying constraints and assigning authority to the project manager (Scribd, 2008). Successful program and project management requires diligent management and monitoring of not only the schedule, but of the entire team. FTI can use project management software, similar to that which was successfully used by Boeing to track various portions of the project (Bennett, et al, 2008). The stakeholders will need to be kept informed of the progress of the projects in order to allow for decisions to be made in a timely fashion. This can be done with an effective communication plan similar to the satellite real time communications developed by FedEx (Bennett, et al 2008). This will also allow for reporting of the project status to all stakeholders, which is crucial. Stakeholders must be informed of the high priority risk items and costs status to allow for any changes to be made and to avoid delays. The plan will need to have a diagram for monitoring control progress, such as a contingency plan, detailed milestones, confirmed deadlines, and checklists. These will be crucial to the project (Scribd, 2008). Another significant part of the plan is the closing. After the project is completed, an assessment of the project will need to be conducted. This will allow for a review of the results which will be compared to the objectives. A closing audit will also be completed, with a review of the challenges which were faced and opportunities for continuous improvement on the next project (Scribd, 2008). Business Case The Galleria project is expected to generate about $10 million over the first two years, and the project is expected to break even in five years. The projected annual revenue from the restaurant and gaming is $1 million in year 1 and will grow to $35 million in year 10. Another $4 million expected annually from other sources. Because this is a new business, the initial investment can be $18 million or higher. If the estimates are a bit high, it may take a bit longer. It could take up to seven years to break even. This still allows for a fairly quick break-even point and an even greater return on investment when considering long-term financial goals. The Galleria project is the most suitable for FTI, and it will fit in well with the strategic plans for the company and will provide a strong financial return on investment. Building new competencies is important to FTI to help achieve their vision of being among the top 10 hospitality service providers and the corresponding mission statement of attracting more visitors and customers. Proposed Resources FTI will need to shift resources to manage this program. Sprint was faced with a similar problem in their Enterprise Property Services project. They devoted 25% of their executive team to manage the new program management. Sprint was able to do this by outsourcing many non-core functions. The collaborative approach allowed better management of the performance of the program because of the shift from individual goals to focusing on organizational goals (Bennett, et al, 2008). Another method of managing resources is the ââ¬Å"triple constraint,â⬠which involves making tradeoffs between scope, time and cost for a project. A project life cycle will have inevitable changes to the scope, time or cost of the project. However, where most projects fail is that when one of the areas changes and appropriate adjustments are not made to the other areas. For example, if a deadline is moved up, FTI will have to decide what actions are needed with regard to cost or scope to ensure the deadline is met without compromising the quality of the product (Purdue, 2008) Conclusion A well-formulated strategy helps to marshal and allocate an organizations resources into a viable posture based on its relative internal competencies and shortcomings. A well formulated strategy also helps individuals anticipate changes in the environment, and contingent moves by intelligent opponents.â⬠(Purdue, 2008). Many businesses require some type of strategy in order to be successful; otherwise their efforts and resources will be spent haphazardly and wasted. Friar Tucker International has the opportunity to realize its financial goals while maintaining focus on its vision and mission by successfully implementing the strategic program management proposed in this paper. FTI will need to follow the details of the strategic program which have been provided to ensure successful programs and future projects. With the strategic program plan proposed and implemented, the future is an optimistic one for Friar Tucker International. An examination of the connection between sexuality and suffering Essay
An examination of the connection between sexuality and suffering - Essay Example Journal du voleur is the closest Genet came to writing a traditional autobiography. As Dââ¬â¢Asciano (1998) points out, though his other novels incorporate names from the author's life experience, the focus of these novels is to create mythical characters out of names pulled from Genetââ¬â¢s reality. The character ââ¬Å"Genetâ⬠figures in these other novels as the creator/narrator, but it is in the Journal that Genet concentrates on recounting his life experience (Dââ¬â¢Asciano, 1998). As White has shown in his biography of Genet, the chronology of events in Journal, while loosely followed, does, in fact, correspond with Genet's life in the late 1930's. What is most important to Genet, however, is not a simple recounting of his life story, but rather the elaboration of his aesthetic preoccupations. It is in this narrative that Genet identifies most clearly his means of literary production, and discusses the relationship of body to text. It is within the context of the stated reality, and as influenced by Genetââ¬â¢s own sexual proclivities, that the theme of sexuality and suffering asserts itself. Traditionally, autobiography is a narrative form that has as its primary theme the recounting of the life of the author. The key element in identifying a narrative as autobiographical is, to use the terminology of Philippe Lejeune (1975, p. 1), the pacte autobiographie By identifying the pacte the ideal reader realises without a doubt that the character denoted by ââ¬Å"Iâ⬠is indeed a projection of the author on the page. Genet accomplishes this in Journal principally by providing verifiable statistics regarding his ââ¬Å"statut civil,â⬠- his date of birth and the circumstances which surrounded it. ... Genet accomplishes this in Journal principally by providing verifiable statistics regarding his "statut civil," - his date of birth and the circumstances which surrounded it. Though a Genet character exists in Genet's other novels, this information appears only in Journal du voleur. What is most remarkable about this fact is that, rather than stabilizing the identity of the author, by its very nature it destabilises. The fact that Genet was orphaned at a young age, and that he knows only the name of his mother, and not that of his father, puts the author character in an awkward position in a society more patrilineal than most. The Journal is in many ways, an aesthetic treatise, an examination of the ideas and practices that have made Genet a creator. The two fundamental concepts that drive his creation are "beauty," and a vertiginous space that we could call the "vide," or, "nothingness." As may be inferred from Barber's (2004) analysis of Journal, Genet's writing exists in a tense space between the aesthetic attractions of the physical world, and the intellectual imperative of the contemplation of the emptiness of existence. Genet attributes his attraction to the physical world to its beauty. Pinning down a precise meaning of beauty is difficult. In the short entry on "beauty" in the Oxford Companion to Philosophy, Aquinas is quoted as defining beauty as "that which pleases in the very apprehension of it" (Hondrich, 1995, p. 80). This definition, though vague, does point to two components of the assessment of beauty, the observer and the observed. There is no beauty without a subjectivity to apprehend it. The article goes on

GPS Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
GPS - Term Paper Example The technology is owned by the United States that offers users through navigation, positioning as well as timing services. This system is composed of three segments that are control segment, the space segment and the user segment. The United Sates Air Force maintains, develops as well as operates the space and control segments (Bajaj, Ranaweera, & Agrawal, 2002). This paper presents a detailed overview of global positioning system. This paper will outline the history, advantages and disadvantages of the global positioning system. Initially GPS system was designated the navigation system with timing and ranging (or NAVSTAR) global positioning system. Additionally, US Department of defense initiated this project to offer round-the-clock and all-weather navigation abilities intended for sea, military ground as well as air forces. In addition, with the development of global positioning system it has become an integral asset in several civilian applications as well as industries around the world, comprising recreational utilization (for example aircraft, boating, hiking), business vehicle fleet tracking, as well as surveying. However, the general development of global positioning system was initiated by LORAN and the Decca Navigator developed ultimately in 1940s, as well as employed throughout World War II. Additionally, to attain precision requirements, GPS employs rules and regulations of general relativity to make right the satellites atomic clocks. In addition, by seeing these parallel developments in the GPS technology, in 1960s it was recognized that a superior system could be developed by producing the most excellent technologies from 621B, Timation, Transit and SECOR in a multi-service program. Thus, a meeting of approximately 12 military officers held at the Pentagon in 1973. In which they decided to create a DNSS (defense navigation satellite system). Thus, after one year of that meeting the DNSS

Alzheimer disease Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Alzheimer disease - Essay Example These neurons and synapses are lost when the individual begins to develop Alzheimerââ¬â¢s disease. The cerebral cortex and subcortical regions are impacted because gross atrophy is found in these regions (Pashek & DiVenere, 2006: p. 143). The temporal lobe and parietal lobe witness degeneration which can lead to the progression of the disease. AD causes specific brain regions to shrink which has been corroborated by the presence of MRI and PET reports (Wilson et al, 2008: p, 45). Definition Alzheimerââ¬â¢s disease (AD) is a form of dementia that is incurable. It is a progressive disease in which the conditions of the patient worsen with the passage of time with the ultimate outcome being death. The disease was first identified by a German psychiatrist Alois Alzheimer in the early 20th century. AD is found to be prevalent in people above the age of 65 years. Currently, it is estimated that there are 26.8 million patients with the disease (Small & Perry, 2005: p. 125). The causes of the disease are unknown while medication seems to alleviate some of the symptoms. Disease Start AD starts when individuals suffer from short term memory loss. They might also be suffering from language problems and encountering difficulty in concentrating. Additionally, behavioral problems might be exhibited in individuals with mood swings and anger being the primary symptoms (Small et al, 2003: p. 353). The difficulties in perception, executive functions, and movements can also signal the onset of the disease among individuals. This gradually worsens with the passage of time as more intermediate and severe forms of symptoms are witnessed in individuals. Role of Environment Empirical studies are studying the impact of environmental factors upon the development of AD in individuals. This approach seeks to move away from the widespread emphasis on genetic factors as being the primary cause of AD (Small et al, 2005: p. 5). Studies are being conducted to investigate the relationship between cognitive decline and vascular and metabolic conditions. For instance, a study was conducted by the Rhode Island Hospital which found a link between nitrates in the environment and Alzheimerââ¬â¢s disease. Nitrates are found in increasing numbers in the environment as well as in processed foods. People who are vulnerable to heart disease might have a greater chance of developing AD. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes are considered to be having a possible link with the development of AD (Tomoeda et al, 2006: p. 151). Research is still being conducted into the role of environmental factors in developing AD. This research is still inconclusive which means that there is the need for clear and precise goals. it is through the use of innovative and creative strategies that success can be attained within a short period of time. It is hoped that the study of the causes of AD will help in the development of effective and efficient medications to combat the disea se. Causes The exact causes of AD are still unknown despite decades of research into the problem. Genetics is considered to partly cause this disease as autosomal dominant inheritance has been witnessed in patients (Blacker et al, 2009: p. 1198). The oldest hypothesis is that AD is caused because the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine is diminished in brains. However, this hypothesis has become unacceptable because medications that

An analysis of the budgeting in management accounting
An analysis of the budgeting in management accounting With the fast development of in the area of management accounting, more and more managers are aware of the importance of the budgeting, budgeting is an important control system in almost all organizations (Stephen C. Hansen, Wim A. Van der Stede, 2004, Management Accounting Research, Multiple facets of budgeting: an exploratory analysis,), and it provides an expression of the steps which management must take in the current period if it is to fulfil organizational objectives. (M.W.E.Glautier and B.Underdown. (1997) Accounting Theory and Practice, p531, 6th Edition, Great Britain: PITMAN PUBLISHING). This paper will discuss that what is budgeting and the budgeting committee, the budgeting purpose and types of budget, the benefits and limitations in the budget, and how to be a successful budgeting. The budgeting process focuses on the medium term period, normally one year, and it is an expression of plan in monetary terms, which is aim to achieve the organizational objectives, as Colin Drury said the budget is a financial plan for implementing the various decisions that management has made.(Colin Drury. (2008) MANAGEMENT AND COST ACCOUNTING. p10, 7th Edition, China: GENGAGE Learning) The various decisions are covered in cost and revenues, cash flow, assets and liabilities. In additional, the annual budget likely to be sub-divided for reporting periods, such as monthly budget reports, because the risk can be reduced in the monthly budgets and it helps managers easy to find the problems during the operation. In organizations, budgeting is often in the hands of a budgeting committee (M.W.E.Glautier and B.Underdown. (1997) Accounting Theory and Practice, p533, 6th Edition, Great Britain: PITMAN PUBLISHING), so the members of the budget committee is very important. For example, in the sales budgeting process, marketing department may be deliberately underestimated future sales, thus contributing to their performance evaluation. However, underestimate the quantity of sales will result in a corresponding reduction in production, which means the production will not be able to achieve the most efficient state. Another example, some department may padding the expenses in order to get more budget funds, resulting in a waste of money. Therefore, the budget committee should consist of the various important department managers, and some high-level executives be the leader. Furthermore, it usually has an accountant to be the budget officer in the budget committee, the role of the budget officer is to coordinate the individual budgets into a budget for the whole organization, so that the budget committee and the budgetee can see the impact of an individual budget on the organization as a whole. (Colin Drury. (2008) MANAGEMENT AND COST ACCOUNTING. p357, 7th Edition, China: GENGAGE Learning). The budgeting purposes and types of budget setting There are six useful purposes of budgeting, which are planning, coordinating, communicating, motivating, controlling and evaluating. Therefore, the budget will help managers through the planned activities to determine the target of the organisation and allowed managers to consider all possible situations. however it not only to reflect projected revenue and expenditure budget as of the amount of financial figures, the budget is a kind of resource allocation, input and output of the program content, quantity, and the input-output timing details. Through the budget, so that business managers can have clear objectives. In addition, the budget serves as a vehicle through which the actions of the different parts of an organization can be brought together and reconciled into a common plan. (Colin Drury. (2008) MANAGEMENT AND COST ACCOUNTING. P355, 7th Edition, China: GENGAGE Learning) and it is an effective way of the communication in the organization. Managers and staff can be motivated b y the budget because of it can help to enhance the predictability and avoid blind behavior and thereby to motivate they to complete the objectives. The Budget is based on quantitative way to show management standards, it can thus be judged according to the budget implementation effectiveness of the work and analyze differences improve their work. Two types of the budget setting are top down and bottom up. The table of illustration as following TOP DOWN BOTTOM UP OVERALL BUDGET FUNCTIONAL BUDGETS DEPARTMENTAL BUDGETS In the top down way, it typically start with overall budget then broken down into functional budgets and then into departmental. If budget setting is top down, it can be directly link to the organization objectives and reflected to the authority and mandatory of budget. However, it may be limited of the information from lower levels thus that separated from reality and may reduce the effect of budget in planning, coordination and control. On the other hand, in the bottom up way, it typically start with departmental budgets then build up into functional budgets and then into overall budget. Similarly, if budget setting is bottom up, although it can solve the lack of the information from lower levels, but the exchange of information in each department may be not enough thus plans of one department is conflict with others, therefore the lack of coordination will arise. To solve those problems, the budget setting should be repeated between individuals and the budget committee. Firstly, the objectives proposed by the budget committee, such as the quantity of sales, production costs and target profits. Next, use those indicators to discuss with the various departments in order to reach an agreement, and then the budget committee will based on the agreement to determine the master budget and give to the departments. After this, the various departments based on the master budget to set out departmental budgets and build up into functional budgets. Finally, the budget committee use those individuals budget to set out the final master budget and gives to each department. The benefits and limitations The budget has some benefits to the organization, and it will show in the figure as follow: Provide a basis for a system of control Budgets Provide a system of authorization Help co-ordinate the various sections of the business Motivate managers to better performance Promote forward thinking and identification of short-term (Perter Atrill. Eddie McLaney. (2008) Accounting and Finance for Non- specialists. P312. 6th edition. Essex: Prentice Hall Europe.) However, the budget has also been found a number of limitations, such as the time lag in the system, which means the results of last month may not be reported in time and be delayed to next month or later. Moreover, there will always be some changes in the organization during the budget period; such as the shortage of funds, labour and materials, and the budget may be impacted thus the objective of organization cannot achieve the optimal state. To be successful budgeting As we have discussed in this paper, there are some limitations of the budget, and those limitations may lead to it hard to implement and dissatisfaction may express regarding how budgeting operates in practice. The following is some way to solve those problems and make the budgeting more successful. Firstly, the budget should be always concerned to achieve the objectives of organization, and need to avoid to only focus on its own target, the reasons of the budget may only focus on its own target and forget the objectives is that it may not properly reflect the requirements of objectives.. In order to prevent the replacement of the budget target, it should enable the budget to more reflect with the organizations objectives. Secondly, the budgeting should be flexibility, it because of that business conditions are always changing. Although we have planned the business conditions for the situation may occur in the future and make appropriate action to deal with changes, but on the one hand the budget setting cannot cover everything, and on the other hand the situations are always changing that some problems cannot be foresee. Therefore, it is necessary to view the budgeting process as a guide to future action, rather than a rigid plan which must be followed irrespective of changing circumstances.(M.W.E.Glautier and B.Underdown. (1997) Accounting Theory and Practice, p532, 6th Edition, Great Britain: PITMAN PUBLISHING) Conclusion In conclusion, budgeting is an important tool for management planning and control, and it has some useful functions for businesses and organizations, but it also has great limitations. The key point in the budgeting is make the benefits of it to be maximum, and reduce the limitations and solve problems during the period, thereby the budgeting can be achieved the most effective level. Deception in the Stem-cell Research Debate :: Argumentative Persuasive Topics
Deception in the Stem-cell Research Debate à The Nobel laureates' inaccurate letter to President Bush urging him to feed federal funds to human-embryo stem-cell research has had PR value in the media. It perpetuates a number of misconceptions and misleading statements regarding stem-cell research, particularly embryonic as opposed to adult stem-cell research, and will serve to continue to cloud the issue. Some of these deceptive statements are the subject of this essay. I believe President Bush and his staff are well aware of the truth about embryonic versus adult stem-cell research. Unfortunately, many in the public will read about this letter, recognize some high-profile "icons" or simply that there are a lot of "smart people" who've signed on, and think that they know all about this scientific research. Knowledgeable people do not always perpetuate the truth. President Bush and Congress obviously have the final say on how our federal research dollars will be spent. The hope is that all who are participating in this debate are fully informed about the facts and are not swayed by celebrities who are unfortunately ill-informed or deliberately misled, but rather weigh both the scientific and the ethical evidence. There is a lot of misinformation and deception going on in the press accounts of the stem-cell debate. This is probably the worst problem in this whole debate, the perpetuation (innocent or not) of misleading statements which obscure many of the real facts. The Nobel Laureate letter itself is a prime example of the "mixmaster" treatment of the facts. What is usually lacking from press reports are a few key "adjectives" that clarify the situation - defining whether the cells discussed are human or animal cells, and especially whether they are "embryonic" or "adult" stem cells. For example, the letter sent to President Bush says that "insulin-secreting cells have normalized blood glucose in diabetic mice." These experiments were done with ADULT stem cells from mice, NOT embryonic stem cells. In fact, there are as yet no reports of anyone being able to produce insulin-secreting cells from human embryonic stem cells, but human ADULT stem cells that secrete insulin HAVE been isolated. The letter promulgates the claim (made repeatedly in NIH documents) that adult stem cells do not have the same potential as embryonic stem cells, which in theory can form any tissue. But studies done with adult stem cells (studies which mirror the ones done with embryonic stem cells) DO show that adult stem cells have the capacity to form essentially any tissue.

Patient Record Management System
CHAPTER I The Problem and Its Setting This chapter presents the background of the study, the statement of the problem, the assumptions made in accordance with the design of the project, the scope and delimitation, the significance of the study, the research design and methodology, and the definition of terms used in the study. Background of the Study There have been major progresses in the Information Technology for the past twenty (20) years especially in the field of Medicine. The vast development of technology is the evident in hospitals in other countries as they have developed and implemented different forms of Patient Record Management System making practitioners and health professionalsââ¬â¢ work easier than the manual way of gathering patientââ¬â¢s record that the hospitals had before. In Philippines, only a few hospitals (Saint Lukes Medical Center, Makati Medical City and Asian Hospital and Medical Center) have implemented a fully Electronic Medical Record which includ es all inpatient and outpatient healthcare information. The goal of the hospital is to share information with all the national hospitals and public healthcare facilities and at present they can share data with one branch of the hospital. Some hospitals still use the manual method which is time and energy consuming but why it is that only few hospitals in the Philippines, being a newly industrialized country may have a factor on why implementing a PRMS is impossible. The possible reasons could be insufficient funds, lack of technical expertise and computer skills and the lack of data processing facilities. In addition, the resistance of medical practitioners and health professionals generally to change from manual to electronic documentation may be a problem. Most health administrators and information managers are used to the old system and have this fear that it may take time to change or at least modify some behaviour and attitudes. The reason for wanting to change to an electronic s ystem is important. Most health administrators and information managers expect to move from a paper to paperless environment. This is a major step to help health institutions and the environment at the same time.By having an electronic system, practitioners could improve the accuracy and quality of data recorded in a health record, enhance practitionersââ¬â¢ access to a patientââ¬â¢s record, enabling it to be shared at present and also for the future use, it could also improve the quality of care because of health information that a patient need can be immediately available all the time. At present, people rely on the information from what is electronically made since it can easily be viewed. In the modern world, communication is vital within our lifestyle. With the advent of information and communication provided within a medical institution, practitioners together with their patients within the vicinity of Baguio may use the information easily to increase good organization. P atient Record Management System may provide both useful information with the Doctor and Patient alike, providing and improving easy Doctor-Patient communication. In the advancement of technology, electronic medical records are now growing more popularity today. As stated in the definition on wikipedia. rg about Electronic Medical Records, these are a computerized medical record that is created in an organization that can deliver care such as hospital or physicianââ¬â¢s office. Electronic medical records are intended to be a part of a local stand-alone health information system that allow storage, retrieval and modification of records (retrieved from: Wikipedia. com, November 2011. en. wikipedia. org/wiki/ Electronic_health_record. Article form: http://www. providersedge. com/ehdocs/ehr _articles/Electronic_Patient_Records-EMRs_and_EHRs. pdf). These are medical records of patients that are encoded into the computer system of an organization for the information dissemination of medi cal practitioners in a particular organization such as hospitals, clinics and the like. In the global scenario, in an article by Steenhuysen J. (March 2009), the United States has less than 2 percent of U. S. hospitals that have completely accepted a fully functional electronic medical records. With U. S. President Barrack Obama has made electronic medical records a central piece of his plan to cut costs out of U.S. healthcare system that consistently ranks lower in quality measures than other rich countries. The U. S. President also allotted $19 billion to push into the increase the use of information technology in healthcare. The numbers of without electronic medical records are relatively high compared to those organizations that have adopted Electronic Medical Records. Starfield, B. (1991) postulates that Primary Care in the United States is critical to the provision of giving excellent medical care. From the research in the year 1996, the Institute of Medicine report defined pri mary care as the provision of integrated, accessible health care services by clinicians accountable for addressing most personal health care needs, developing a sustained partnership with patients, and practicing in the context of family and community. These makes more people to receive primary care than in other clinics. These clinics have adopted the innovations of information technology giving more value to the primary care in other clinics. These clinics have adopted the innovations on information technology giving more value to the primary care of their patients. Thus obviously electronic medical records in the clinic are to be present for the ease of accessibility, storage, retrieval and modification of medical records. However, in a smaller scale of health care system. Where Everyone, being succeptible to disease needs to prioritize on prevention in odres to additional expenses on health care. This visiting the doctors clinic today is the most effecient and inexpensivr way to prevent diseases. Offering various diagnosis, vaccinations and maintenance drugs. With todays population, more patients visit the doctors clinic and health records management poses as the most time consuming activity. As keeping numerous pages on file cases and searching this file cases one by one when a patient arrives eats most of the time that could have spent treating another patient. With all of the mentioned cases which inpact the number of patients diagnosed per day. The researchers agreed to conduct a study for Dr. Nelia Bacayââ¬â¢s clinic at SLU hospital of the Sacred Heart, annex. The researchers will try to find ways and practices to lighten up workload and minimize time consumed by developing a system.Statement of the Problem The main objective of the study is to design a Patient Record Management System for Dr. Nelia Bacay in which seeks to answer the following questions: 1. What processes are involved within the practitionersââ¬â¢ medical records of their patients ? 2. What difficulties are encountered regarding the processes involved with the medical records? 3. What features regarding the medical records should be incorporated with the proposed Patient Record Management for Dr. Renato Manalo to their current system? Objective of the StudyThe main objective of the study is to design a Patient Records Management System for Dr. Nelia Bacay that shall lighten up workload and minimize time consumed on operation. The researchers intend to achieve the following: 1. To identify the current standard operating procedure in diagnosing patients. 2. To enumerate and discuss the most tiny consuming fact in the process. 3. To design a Patient Record Management that facilitates a quick and easy way to access and view patients profile. Significance of the Study This study is important in terms of advantages or benefits that would be gained by the following entities:To the Practitioners: The Practitioners will have the main importance of the study because of its increased number of patients and services rendered. More patients are inclined to avail of medical services. This also makes the communication between co-doctors of the same field. To the patients: The best advantage of having a Patient Record Management System is for them to have an ease to research about the Doctorsââ¬â¢ profile and their accessibility through the use of PRMS. Just by a series of clicks and filling out necessary information, an appointment can be made.To the Researchers: The development of a PRMS makes the researchers to be more aware and knowledgeable of the future trend in information and technology specifically on Medical Informatics. Furthermore, by developing a system, programming skills of the researchers are improved. To future researchers: This study can be a reference and guide to other researchers who aim to develop a Patient Record Management System in the future that can be applied to other fields of interest such as hotels, restaurants, shops and alsp other fields of medical profession. Scope and Delimitation of the StudyIn improving the quality of services in an organization or establishment, we make look into other options such as hiring new personnel to increase work capacity, or procuring equipmentto lessen work and human error, or to create a more stable and reliable system may it be manual or computer oriented. In solving this matter, we could consider in the combination of the available options within our grasp. To further optimize the production in our establishment, the company could combine the options of having new equipment and creating a new system or updating the existing one.In putting these two options together, it will provide a more stable, reliable and efficient system to be used in daily transactions. Our project aims to proceed in updating the pre-existing system in the establishment. Changing the format from a manual type to a computer oriented information system. Reconfiguring the old system aims t hat customers and employees have a more convenient. With the project be finished, the company will have a smoother flow of work, lessened human error, improved time in finishing certain processes and as a total, a very significant increase in productivity and creating a reliable Patient Record System.

Lenses experiment plan Essays
Lenses experiment plan Essays Lenses experiment plan Essay Lenses experiment plan Essay Lenses are a transparent material shaped to refract light. Lenses are remarkable and have helped mankind develop in the so many years the world now uses for almost and visual activity from swimming goggles to open heart surgery lenses are used in some form. But lenses are not all the same. There are two main types of lenses convex and concave. These two lenses are opposites of each other and produce different images. Concave lenses are rarer to find in every day life. A concave lens is curved inwards it is shaped like two dishes placed back-to-back. Light passing through a concave lens diverges. Unlike convex lenses, which produce real images, concave lenses produce only virtual images. A virtual image is one from which light rays only appear to come from but in actual fact the do not. This appears as a smaller to produce image just in front of the actual object. Concave lenses are generally prescribed for short-sighted, people. Concave lenses help the eyes to produce a sharp image on the retina instead of in front of it. Convex lenses are more common in everyday life. The lens is very thick in the middle and thinner at the edges. With the unique shape of then lens it causes the lens to converge any light rays that pass through. This produces an image on any surface on the other side of the lens. The human eye lens is a convex lens and is more like an elastic lens and can change its shape to focus. When viewing objects at a distance the lens becomes short at and fat and when viewing objects close up visa versa. Aim: I will be using a ray box with concave and convex lenses to measure focal points. This will be done by sating up a ray box with a convex/concave lens and shining a ray beams through the lenses and drawing over the beams. With this experiment I hope to acquire the skill of measuring focal points and I will hopefully be able to use this skill later on in higher levels science. Safety There are many safety issues that arise when dealing with electricity and laboratorys that is why when conducting an experiment all safety aspects need to be thought about before carrying out the experiment otherwise someone could occur electrocution or a serious injury when conducting the experiment. Its a known fact that the human body can be damaged by electrical currents that is why it is important to take safety measures such as conduct the experiment away from water to prevent electrical fires. Before any experiments are started all the leads and wires should be checked for cuts and loos wiring exposed wiring etc. Another way of preventing electrical fires or electrocution is by checking that the equipment that is has a circuit breaker or a fuse with the rite amp. Another aspect of safety which needs to be considered is the breakage of glass. There are many safety issues that arise when dealing with glass. One of the main parts of the human body when carrying out experiments are they eyes do to the fact they can easily be damaged and are clearly one of the most delicate exposed parts of the human body. To protect these fragile biological sensors a form of protection is crucial. The most common form of eye protection in the laboratory are the goggles. The goggles appear to be very unattractive to many people but and are often interoperated as a burden and not a safety precaution. The goggles are made out of thick plastic which prevents any flying glass entering the eye and causing any harm to the eyes. Within the laboratory there are frequent breakages which can have damaging affects and can cause injury. That is why it is important to try and prevent breakages knowing what the effect of a breakage is and what to do about it. When these breakages occur they can be on minor scale or a disastrous scale. This depends whether the glass is shatters or breaks in to jagged pieces, most lab breakages are on a minor scale and can simply be swept up by using a brush. With hazardous breakages do not attempt to clear the breakage and find someone qualified to attend to the breakage. Method When the experiment was carried out the first thing that needed to be attended to was having all the correct equipment and materials at hand. The following equipment and materials were gathered: * Protractor- A semicircular instrument used for measuring and constructing angles. * Mirror- A surface that reflects light at the angle it hit the surface which creates a virtual image. * Convex lens- A lens which converges light. * Concave lens- A lens which diverges light. * Power pack- A power pack which controls the amount of energy that goes to the light box * Grates- To split the light in to equal and parallel rays. * Pencil- A rod of graphite cased in wood or metal used for drawing or writing which can be erased by an eraser. * A3 paper- paper twice the size of A4 paper used to draw and write on. Once the equipment had been gathered it was placed and was set-up in the centre of the table. A sheet of plain A3 paper was placed on the table with a light box on top of it. Then light box was connected to the power pack and a 3 ray grate was placed at the end of the ray box. Once the ray box was set-up a convex lens was placed in the centre of the sheet of paper and all the equipment was drawn around. Once the equipment had been drawn around the light ray box was switched on and the light rays were drawn showing the focal point (where the lines met). Then a dotted line was drawn from the lens to the focal point and the line was labelled the focal length. This process was repeated with a concave lens Results As every good scientist knows the results are the main aim of the experiment and recording the results is even more important My results are attached on the A3 pieces of paper. Evaluation I will now evaluate my work to date be referring the aim set at the beginning of the assignment and will evaluate and analyse my performance and accomplishment the objectives. Shown above is the initial aim which was stated within the introduction. When I first created this aim I thought I would have an easy journey. As I carried out my experiment, the errors that I encountered were many, to my surprise. However, in the end I successfully carried out the experiment and come out with positive results. Whilst carrying out this experiment I encountered many unexpected errors and I had to overcome them on the spot. As I was conducting my experiment the first error I encountered was that the light box would not turn on. At first I thought it was the power pack and replaced it but that did not seem to work. After replacing the power pack seemed to have no affect I was certain that there was something wrong with the light box so I replaced with another light box but still ended up with sane results as the first time it would not switch on. With changing the power pack and light box there was only one other thing for it the power socket was faulty. With doubt in my head I decided to use another power socket and found that the light box switched on and was working perfectly fine. From here on I did not encounter any other errors. Overall by looking at the problems and potential problems I had I think I didnt carry out a very accurate experiment. With all the minor problems I think the accuracy was not as good as it could have been. I think that the method and the equipment and the materials for this experiment are great for maximum accuracy but they do not eliminate the chance for human error. Over all out of the whole experiment I enjoyed the theory the most due to the fact that it enhanced me knowledge about preparing accurate chemical solutions and it showed me it just wasnt a basic skill but a crucial skill which involved a high level of accuracy I also enjoyed conducting the experiment even though I encountered many errors I enjoyed finding a solution to them. I also think that this experiment has challenged me mentally in every academic way. It has also helped me to develop personal thinking strategies. During this experiment I learnt quote a lot and enhanced my general knowledge of chemicals as a whole and I learnt practical skills of preparing chemical solutions which I will be able to use in the future. Over all this experiment has been an interesting and an enlightening experience which I have gained many skills and much knowledge even though I had encountered many problems I enjoyed the experiment thoroughly and would gladly repeat it.

Production and Operations Management in Williamsons Joinery Essay
Production and Operations Management in Williamsons Joinery - Essay Example The company always focused on the high quality of the products that they offered to the customer and also had high focus on the craftsmanship that was been used over the products where of unique designs and also made very carefully. The company faced a lot of problems related to the inventory management and storage of items as the space in the company got occupied by huge storage of goods as a result the company was incurring huge loss. Though because of the high sales of the custom furnitureââ¬â¢s the company was able to make up its cost but slowly the operational cost increased to a great value and it started affecting the companyââ¬â¢s performance in many ways like by increasing the lead times, reducing the capacity, increasing the overall cost, storage issues etc. This report covers the overall performance of the company in the way it produces its goods including its operational process and layouts, identification of the problems that the company is facing and the specifica tions of those problems by going into the root cause of the problem and also the impact of these problems over the day-to-day operation of the company. All these are been analysed using various concepts of production and operation management to understand the effect of wrong management and the problems that the happen causing a huge impact on the whole operation of the company. According to Tompkins and White in 2003 the impact of the material flow does have an effect from the way the layout s been designed, while Chhajed, Montreuil in 1992 exclaimed that the complexity of the layout design affects in the production process in a huge way. In 1997, Heragu explained that the layouts in the company are generally made based on the flow of the materials between the various facilities in the company. It is been decided based on the space available for each facility.

Appraise the Lean Canvas as a model for start-up businesses. Provide Assignment
Appraise the Lean Canvas as a model for start-up businesses. Provide judgments and interpretations for each element of the model - Assignment Example Here the idea is not to make a perfect business plan, because a perfect plan is a myth. Most of the companiesââ¬â¢ make an initial business plan which changes as one grows. Perfection is not the goal. The idea is to prepare a business plan and start a business with the available resources at hand. In this study we will take a start-up of a manufacturing company like a car manufacturing company named Drizzler which will cater to Indian market. Drizzler will import most of its part from outside India and assemble in India. Discussion Customer Segment Possible Customer List of this start-up is anyone who wants to buy a car to use it. But being a start-up business will cater to middle income level families. In India the middle Income population is rising and their income level is also rising (Osterwalder and Pigneur, 2013, p. 123). India being a developing country, its GDP is growing at a healthy rate as compared to the western developed economies. Hence the needs of the middle income families are also rising day by day. They demand products which were previously used by Upper level people. Drizzler will cater to such customers (Ramaswamy and Namakumari, 2009, p. 234). Value Proposition For a middle income family those who want to buy a car, they are driven mainly by desire to own a car. Drizzler will create a value for the segment by manufacturing car which will not be priced too high and having features which will meet the expectation of regular people. Hence if it can satisfy the need for safety, and the esteem needs, then it will cater to the need of average household (Nielsen and Lund, 2012, p. 52). The most important customer segment is the middle income households who wants a bike but can afford a car. It should cater to such families who want to drive car and have a feeling to owning a car and make it their first family car. This car will give them durability and safety which they seek (Kaplan, 2012, p. 42). It is another factor considered important to m iddle income families. Hence they should give a mileage of about 20-25 km/litre. The seating capacity should be for 5 persons with maximum speed of 200 km/hour. Channels The car will be sold through independent sales channel all over India. Such sales channel includes retail dealers present throughout India. Nowadays in India there has been a trend of increasing sales of car in the Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. It indicates that they must have their presence of distribution channel in those cities. They will sell their products through retail dealers. They must use the advertisement which shows the value proposition it will deliver to the customers (Dent, 2011, p. 141). Through mediums like TV, newspaper, auto magazines and shows on car, it will help them drive their value proposition to the clients. They must also maintain a website which will clearly state the features and the local dealer present. Customer relationships The key to any business is the ability to know what the customer s want. Drizzler will maintain a strong and fast customer relationship programs. Drizzler will run a customer loyalty program. Drizzler will use a magnetic card for anyone who buys the product. When a customer buys a car, he gets points. When the magnetic card is swiped, then the representatives of

The Cross-border Merger of Kraft and Cadbury Term Paper
The Cross-border Merger of Kraft and Cadbury - Term Paper Example An overview of the Kraft ââ¬âCadbury merger In February 2010, Cadbury gave in to Kraftââ¬â¢s US$ 19.7 billion takeover after a fierce battle lasting over 100 days. Kraft Foods US is a major confectionary maker. The British chocolate maker had earlier in 2009, rejected a US$ 16.4 billion hostile takeover bid from Kraft, stating that the value did not represent the intrinsic value of the Cadbury brand. Industry experts believe that the combined group is the number one in chocolate and confectionary segments, as well as the second in the high growth gum segment (Ralph & Olesseni, p.61). Cadbury had agreed for 840 pence per share which would give them a total valuation of $19 billion. Media reported that Cadbury slipped into US giant Kraft Foods and the British Prime Minister committed that the jobs in UK could be protected. It was estimated that Cadbury employees numbered more than 45000 worldwide. It was expected, Kraft Cadbury combined would generate large cost savings, enablin g Kraft to become a global market leader. The conglomeration would also generate annual sales of more than $ 50 billion. The market reaction was mixed especially from UK where the fear of job loss came up and cultural reaction was that the countryââ¬â¢s honor namely Cadburyââ¬â¢s brand, had been given to US. Kraft Foods was one of the major US confectionery manufacturers with net revenue of $42 billion and operating in 150 countries as of 2008. It was founded 1903 as a cheese company by James L. Kraft (Funding Universe, 2002) and over the years established fine brands like Milka, Toblerone, Jacobs, Oscar Mayer and Oreo. Even though Kraft was able to capture US and European markets, it was the second largest food company in the world and Nestle, Switzerland continued to occupy the premier position with its brands firmly established not only in developed countries but also in developing countries. Nestle had reported a net profit of $9.55 billion with an annual turnover of $99 b illion in 2009. Next in the race for second position was Cadbury, UK with its popular brands like Dairy Milk bars, Roses chocolates, Trident gum and Halls cough drops, built over 150 years not only in UK and developed countries but also firmly established its presence in the developing countries like India, Mexico and Brazil for over 50 years. Cadburyââ¬â¢s revenues in 2008 stood at ?5.4billion. Kraft Foods US with an ambition to reach the top slot in the global confectionery market made a bid for $10 billion to acquire a 100% stake in Cadbury at the end of 2009. The bid was rejected outright as the market value of the share was more than ? 7 per share and Kraft Foods had to reconsider the valuation process of Cadbury and made a revised offer of around $ 19.6 billion in early 2010 over which the shareholders of Cadbury numbering over 90% consented to the acquisition. Evolution and Growth of Kraft Foods Kraft Foods Inc., the second largest food company in the world, had brands spr ead over five consumer sectors ââ¬â snacks, beverages, cheese, grocery and convenient meals. Kraft Foods had strong presence worldwide and operated in150 countries as of 2008. The company had evolved from a cheese company, started by James L. Kraft in 1903. James L. Kraft had started his cheese business to relieve the grocers from travelling daily to procure cheese. The merger of Kraft ââ¬â Phenix and National Dairy Products Corporation in 1930 led to the further growth of Kraft. New brands such as Miracle Whip salad dressing, Velveeta pasteurized process cheese spread, were launched and turned to be successful. Innovative advertising strategy followed by Kraft was another driving force for Kraftââ¬â¢s success. The company was renamed as Kraft Foods Company in 1945 and during the post war period Kraft Foods continued with its new product launches and innovative advertising. In spite of various restructuring activities, Kraft General Foodsââ¬â¢ financial results were no t rosy. In early 1995, the three units, Kraft USA, General
