While messages obviously were unable to be transferred electronically, humans invented different ways to trade information and news with other people. Firstly was the post. In order to send a friend a message, a letter would have had to been written and mailed. Mailing messages was a long process, often taking days to get one message to another person. This method (still used today) was not the most convenient because there is no urgency or speed in mailing a letter. Luckily in the mid 1800’s the telegraph was invented. Sent for the first time in 1838, the telegraph was the first instance of sending a message (4). A telegraph is defined â€Å"as the transmission of textual or symbolic messages without the physical exchange of an object. This is the first instance of a message being sent in a â€Å"virtual† sense (2). While messages could be delivered thro ugh the mail within a matter of days, a telegraph could be transmitted live. At the time this was quite a feat. When studying the creation of the internet, it is important to remember that not one single man directly created the web that we know today. Soon after that Pinocchio is again confronted by Foulfellow the fox, who is able to convince him to go to Pleasure Island a place with no school or laws. Kids can eat, drink, smoke, fight and destroy what they wish, all under the vigilant eye of The Coachman. What Pinocchio doesn’t know is that the more reckless the kids are at Pleasure Island the better because the main purpose of this island is to turn reckless youth into donkeys which will later be exploited by the Coachman to work in a mine. Pinocchio begins to turn into a donkey, he grows ears and a tail, he begins to realize what is happening and regains his consciousness and is able to escape. Once, he is able to get back home, he finds out that his creator Geppetto has been swallowed by a whale. It is at this moment that Pinocchio begins the three stages of Initiation he leaves behind his bad-mannered lifestyle and goes on a unselfish quest to save his father. Separation from his old ways starts when he bravely jumps in the ocean and looks for Mondo the whale and attempts to get swallowed by it so that he could get reunited with his Creator in order to save him. He finally finds the whale and is able to get reunited with Geppetto. Pinocchio develops an escape plan by burning wood in order to make Monstro sneeze. The plan works, Pinocchio grabs a hold of Geppeto and swims as fast as he can but Monstro goes after them and causes them to crash into land. I believe this part where Pinocchio is trying to save his father is an example of liminality because he is unsure of what is to come. He is in limbo as to what will happen next. As soon as Geppetto regains consciousness he realizes that Pinocchio is laying lifeless face down in a puddle. They take his wooden remains home and mourn his death, but the Blue Fairy decides that Pinocchio has proven himself unselfish and thus fulfills her promise to turn him into a real boy, bringing him back to life. This is what I believe is the last step of initiation, reaggregation, Pinocchio has created a new self and has a new identity. This is now the identity that he has, and the old identity has been destroyed, and he is ready to reincorporate himself back into society as this new person. Thats the business. You cannot make it personal. The best you can do is not let them review again. 2) People love the book or having met you, but their life is not you and your book. Their life takes them elsewhere, and reviews arent high on their list of things to do. . . unless thats specifically what they do. 3) The cheaper the cost of the book, the less professional the reviews. Not a 100 percent maxim, but pretty close. There are readers out there who troll for free and 99-cent books, and they have no qualms about throwing nasty up on Amazon or Goodreads. 4) Many book reviews sites and professional reviewers ask for your book, but that doesnt guarantee you will land a review. They take reviewers seriously, and often the better books consume their time. Remember, competition is fierce. Sometimes you dont make the cut. 5) People are more likely to review a print book than an ebook. Your ebook is hidden amongst hundreds on a Kindle or Nook. Out of sight, out of mind. A print book has to sit someplace, chances are more visibly, giving your striking cover the opportunity to beckon the reader and remind them to read and review. And to a reviewer, a print book sometimes represents a more serious commitment from the author. Mailing a book is often a $10+ commitment. Absolutely nothing is absolute in the publishing business. So when prepping for your book release, build the cost of review copies into your budget and know that you wont get 100 percent return on your investment. And continue to hope that a few reviews become serious nuggets for your website, press releases, and maybe your cover.
